Semi Homemade Hand Soap

We traveled quite a bit last summer for hubby's doctor's visits. We stayed overnight at various hotels because hubby couldn't physically handle the long road trip back home. Thankfully he's better and we're no longer traveling so much but it's left me with a rather large collection of hotel soaps. What to do with them???

Here's a nifty little project you can do with hotel soaps or any bar soap bits you have lying around the house.
  1. Grate soap bits with a cheese grater into a glass dish or double boiler.
  2. Add boiling water and stir till all the soap is melted.
  3. Add optional scented oil.
  4. Allow to cool overnight in a glass dish.
  5. Stir well.
  6. Transfer to soap pump with a spoon and large funnel.
I used one grated hotel soap bar and a half pint of boiling water. If the consistency is too thick for your needs, place the glass dish back in a pot of boiling water to re-melt the soap. Mix more boiling water, allow to cool, and stir when cooled.

It's that simple to have your own hand soap, semi homemade!

  2. What a great idea! I will have to make some of that. We always have those little soaps around and they seem to be around forever!
    Thanks!

  3. Thanks for this idea. I am all about recycling items. I had been collecting the soap for shelters. I guess both are great ideas. I will try this one for sure. My son broke out (on his face, legs and arms) from the Suave free and clear shower gel so I put it in the soap pump for washing hands only.

  4. I've done something similar, with a regular sized bar of soap and at least 3 cups of water, and I find that my soap will start out very thin and solidify over time. Has anyone else had this problem? Any possible solutions?

  5. This occurs with all my home made hand soaps. I think it may have something to do with the ingredients in solid soaps and the whole soap making process. I simply add a little hot water and give it a good shake to bring the proper consistency back.

I don't make soap from scratch. I just discovered a nifty way to use the soap bits I have on hand. If you want a more stable soap then, you might want to check out soap making guides and books at the library or craft store. Glycerins, essential oils, lye and other things are used in making authentic soap from scratch. I discovered this link on eHow that may help you. http://www.ehow.com/how_9095_make-liquid-hand.html
